11th Meeting Report - Thursday 14th October 2004

Denton's first race of the winter 04/05 season

13 drivers took up the challenge of the Denton raceway on a wet and cold night. We had lost Budge due to work commitments however the meeting saw Chaddy back (great to see him!) Antony on his first visit.

The meeting started on a quiet note. I had lost my Grandma and as a mark of respect all drivers held a moments silence. A very nice and respectable touch. Thanks to all!

Well the first thing about this meeting was the new fence and lighting system that Duncan and myself had installed. The first racer to arrive was Chris 24, he didn't notice the fence though!!! However as more racers showed up there was a mix of reactions, Richard was picking a post for Kirky, Kirky just said "oh dear", Nige's face lit up!! And Young Jon thought he would try and bounce his car off it on to the center green! Myself and Dunc thought a metal wire fence would really add to the racing and make Denton even more fun!! It also looks very authentic. I know Glen has a post and rope fence, and it was the norm back in the 70s, however I don't know if anybody made a full metal fence. Over to Alec, Glen, Les and Martin to let me know. The new lights also enhanced the racing red and green lights now adorn the top of 4 fence posts and look really effective.

Y Jon bouncing off the fence on to the center green.
But this is what happens when he found a post.

On to the racing - Heat 1 - Saw seven drivers take to the new track. Chris 24 took up the early running. His new Smith Trans flash car looked great and went well too. Young Jon, Nige and Cath took the more cautious approach and nobody really tested the fence. Kirky came on next and was having a nightmare, he looked a bit rusty and took a few lanes to get back in to his stride. Chris 24 was flying in this one, only Young Jon came anywhere near with a late spurt on the inner lanes. This night was certainly one for the lower graders. Dunc was trying out his Nelson lightweight car and was flying, however there were a lot of other fast cars in front of him and they certainly made the most of the grades. In the end Chris took the win with 34 points, and Young Jon 2nd with the same score but less heat wins.

From left to right - Kirky Geoff and Hil (73) in heat 1.

Heat 2 - 6 racers took to the track. Young Cath took up the early running followed by Anthony. Chaddy was having fun and broke a wire (on his car not the fence), Chaddy at Denton with a club car! Class!! After the first 2 lanes Cath had a healthy lead from Anthony. However Chris 15 was next on and instantly took a max on lane 1. Richard and myself had a real hard time trying to pick up the pieces and also trying to catch flying lower graders (or should I say " soon to be upgraded lower graders") In the end Chris 15 took a fine win, followed by Cath who raced really well.

Is it a good idea to bury the person who gives you a lift to the meeting? Never mind that he's the gold top as well!!!!!!!!!!

All racers had noticed an increase in speed and grip, the track had been cleaned last Sunday and then left. Apart from the fence and addition of lights that's all we did. Maybe the battery was well charged. But I don't know why the track was any quicker. Still it made for some great racing!!!!

Consi time - Two places were up for grabs and this race saw silver and gold take to the track, along with myself. Early leader was Nige followed by myself, however Anthony made the most of his yellow top status to score a near max score on his first lanes. Geoff was also finding his feet his car is started to find the groove and he was definately back on the pace. Dunc had reverted back to his race car and looked a bit slower but more likely to take a hit, I had also reverted back to my regular race car to try and find a bit more bite. In the end Anthony had the pace to take a good win, followed by Nige, Ant had 46 points, Nige 39, Dunc took a battling 3rd, but was 8 points off the pace. This race saw the first big test of the fence, guess who was behind it!!
No prizes for guessing who it was!!! Richard!!! Class!! I think we have a picture of the post!

Hil in the fence in consolation.
Consolation winner Anthony with promoter.

Final - Young Jon and Chris were the highest graded drivers in this one. It was Young Jon that took the early lead, however Anthony caught right back up with a max on lane 1. Young Jon struggled on the outer lanes and it was Cath that took the initiative and was scoring well. I thought Chris would be there, but he was having a hard time passing the lower graders. In the end Cath took her first final ever! Well done Cath! Antony was second, followed by Chris.

Y Jon, Nige, Chris (15) and Antony in final action.

GN - All drivers raced and as it was Friday night we ran 5 races per lane, it took a bit longer to run, but it meant plenty of races and action. The fence was really tested in this one. Chris 15 really enjoyed the outer lanes and spent half the race trying to hit the posts with his back bumper. As you can guess his back bumper was badly bent, but Chris had a big smile on his face. Young Jon was also trying to use the fence as a launch pad to the in field. Again he wiped out the back bumper! In the end there was a race somewhere between all the action and fun! The fence certainly affected this one. With no fielding there were lots of dead cars to avoid and move, hopefully we got plenty of pictures! The non-finalists really took this was by the scruff of the neck and were out to prove they could score points at Denton. Again Richard was having a lot of fun and getting really stuck in! He loves to use the bumper and was trying to launch people through the fence!! He he Dunc took a strong win, followed by myself and Kirky (who was back in the groove by now)

GN action with Dunc, Chris (15), Kirky and Chris (24).
Grand National winner Dunc with Promoter

This was a great nights racing, the new fence has certainly added to the Denton atmosphere and it makes for some great racing. The lower grades certainly made the most out of their advantage, but they will soon be up in the blues and reds and some fast racers will be back down to blue and yellow hopefully I will one of them!!!
Thanks again to all who attended,
I hope to see you soon. Special thanks to Hil for helping with food, and Dunc was his dedication and expertise with the fence build he was fitting a new switch at 7pm!!
Next meeting is the 28th October and will be the first round of the club car championship. Should be a cracker.

Enjoy your racing and keep smiling!
