Meeting Report - Thursday 3rd March 2005

This was the last meeting at Denton for the winter season, so there was a couple of major trophies up for grabs – The track championship and the GN championship. Richard the defending track champ wasn’t in the running this year, but he had been a worthy holding of the title, and fought hard in every race he was in. Dunc was the defending GN champ, and going in to this meeting he was the only one guaranteed to be in the race (due to his high scores up to this point).

Just to add some more spice – this meeting was also a qualifying round for the Northern championship. The first ever qualifier at Denton!

Gary and Jane had also some up with the goods in regards to a sponsorship deal! It sounds like Coventry stadium here! Gary and Jane had supplied a raft of great trophies, so each race winner would take home of these! I had got the trophies engraved, they looked the part! They had also put an extra trophy for tryer of the evening – an extra reward for the driver who got stuck in and really tried!
Thanks Gary and Jane!

I had also let 16 racers book in, instead of the normal 14, just more spice to add!!!
Ahh also forget the new format just for the 16 racers – 4 heats of 4 drivers, just the winner through! 2 consolations, again just the winner through!!

Wow – I'm out of breath!

Before this meeting even started we had built up a head of steam and a lot of racers were really up for this one. I am really pleased to report that once the racing started this good feeling continued! I also think a lot of racers just wanted to race, have some fun and if they were lucky pick up some silverware! Just the way it should be!

Right heat 1 – Oh – before I start, on his way out, Big N said he was looking forward to a monster meeting report – I hope this ok for you fella! So then it was just one through from each race, I had divided the racers by grade, so it was 1 driver at each grade. As fair as! Chris and Y Jon were the top drivers in this one; however both Hil and Chaddy have been known to get stuck in when required. At the start Chris got the break, but Y Jon kept in the groove a lot more. Chaddy was struggling a bit and took 2 lanes to get on the score board! Come on Chaddy I know you can do better than that! Hil was doing a little better, but it was hard race for her, as Chris was not taking any prisoners in this one, Y Jon looked happier letting Chris do this, but he raced well and played his tactics well. One eye on the track championship eh!!! Anyway in the end Y Jon won it by a comfortable margin, Chris tried his best, but was just pipped for 2nd by Hil.

Heat 2 - Once again Gary and Jane got drawn in the same heat! I joined in the fun along with Geoff. It was a close start, but Gary made the most of his yellow top grading and piled on the points. Jane was having fun and certainly was hard to pass. She gave everybody the same stick, and certainly wasn’t afraid to use the bumper! In the end Gary scored a massive 34 points, I was 2nd with 18 points!

Heat 3 - Alan was enjoying his white top start and scored a max on lane 1. However Richard was also in the mood and he also got a max on lane 1! Game on. Big N and Cath made up the rest of the heat, and they both had an influence on this one. Big N and Richard had a great battle through out the race; Richard also had to get past Cath to have a chance of catching Cath. In the end it was a little bit much for Richard to do. Alan sneaked the win with 25 points, Cath and Richard both had 23 points, Richard took 2nd with more wins. A good race.

Heat 4 - The last heat of the night. Kirky made the most of his yellow grade (another good racer down at yellow!) and got maximum points on lane 1. However Dunc scored enough points to keep within striking distance. Pete and Chris Clarke made up the 4. Kirky was a leading by a clear way at half way, however Dunc scored a max on lane 1, while Kirky only managed to pick up 2 points. So going in the last lane here was 1 point in it. Dunc had a better last lane and took a good win with 29 points, Kirky had got out with a fight though and had tried on a couple of occasions to hit Dunc off the track, 10 of 10 for the effort Kirky.

Only final spaces available, the track championship was nearly decided at this point. I had to make the final to have any chance of catching Y Jon, however he had already out scored me by 10 points, even if I made the final. However there were 12 people in total fighting for 2 places, this was across 2 consolations – 6 in each.

Consi 1 - Kirky took a massive lead over the first 2 sets of races. Hil was not far behind, followed by Chris Crewe. Richard had the bit between his teeth in this one, he knew that Kirky was away with it, but tried 100% all night to use the bumper and get stuck in! Again he had some great races with Big N, who was also interested in a final spot. In the end it was Kirky who had scored enough points for the win, Hil took 2nd.

Consi2 - I had it all to do in this one, however it was strong grid, I made a good start, but Cath was not far behind. I benefited from the action ahead of me, as Chaddy and Chris Clarke were having fun knocking themselves and others off! By the 3rd set of races I had a small lead, Geoff was closest to me. Pete was also starting to score well, but was enjoying the fun. In the end I did a caravan and managed to stay on for all of my races, this gave me the win ahead of Chris Clarke.
So the track championship was just alive.

Final time - Dunc and Alan started off the strongest, Dunc looked determined to catch and pass Alan where ever he could. Young Jon looked a lot more chilled out, I think he knew the track championship was his. Kirky was also struggling a bit more in this one, he was getting caught very quickly and didn’t come on top. Gary was also having less luck and also got caught up the hectic race. This was an excellent race, Dunc was racing very well from the back, and so was Alan from the front. Going in the last set of races there was only 7 points in at, at the end Dunc took a good win with 49, Alan with 42. So Alan keeps his white roof (for now!) anyway. I took 3rd, Kirky 4th, Gary 5th and Y Jon 6th.
Another great race!

GN time - Nobody wanted to home! So it was 2 monster 8 car GN races, followed by a GN final. I think I knew why everybody wanted to stay. After the GN final there would be the GN championship race, the line up which hadn’t been sorted! Dunc was the only one to have enough points to be in it. The rest was based on tonight’s racing. There were a few more caravans in each of these races, but in the end all racers got in the spirit and got stuck in.
GN1 - was won by Hil, who was certainly out to prove she can get round Denton and do well, she raced very well! Big N took 2nd and also showed he was up for this race, young Jon sneaked the 3rd and final spot.
GN2 – this was another good race, Chaddy and Chris Clarke were out causing trouble! Chaddy was having fun and made it hard for racers who were on the outer lanes, he kept coming off and getting stuck in the fence! On lane 4 you just crashed right in to him!! Top stuff!! What GNs are all about.
Chris Crewe was also in this one, he knew he had to do well to keep up the pressure, and as a Mr GN himself he wanted to be in the big race. In the end Richard had his sensible head on to take the win, followed by Chris Crewe and Kirky.

GN Final - 1st half it was a grid of caravans, nobody got stuck in! The fielders, marshals, scorer and watchers all commented on the lack of action (well wound everybody up!!). It worked and the 2nd half was fantastic. Bumper work all over the track, it was fair and fun!!! It made for a great race and I really enjoyed this one! A real race in the GN spirit! The result was very very close, but Hil had got one with the job in hand and took a fine win, just one point in hit ahead of Chris Crewe! Well done Hil!!!
To me the best race of the night.

Right last race of the night – the GN championship race – sponsored by Team Big.
Frantic activity took place after the GN races. Dunc had brought his lap top and was adding up the final tally for this one. Himself and Chris were through, along with Hil, but it was tied between myself and Cath, on count back Cath had done it, Well done Cath! So Just 4 racers in this one, Dunc and Chris from the blue line, Cath and Hil from the Red line. A classic shoot out under GN rule. Close start, Dunc and Hil took up the running, Chris knew he had to beat Dunc to win this, but knew that Cath and Hil were capable of winning this race too. However by the half way Dunc had shown his experience, he was well ahead of all racers and came out a fine winner with 46 points, 2nd on 22 points was Chris, followed Hil on 19 and Cath 15. All racers made it a good race and they kept Dunc on his toes, this was another good race which was good to watch.

So that was it for another season at Denton. What a great nights racing, the first qualifier at Denton went well. 16 racers – the most yet!!! It was a bit busy, but still a good night!

Young Jon took the track championship – well done Y Jon.
Dunc retained the GN championship – well done Dunc.

Thanks to Gary and Jane for the trophies, Team Big for the GN championship trophy, my folks for the food, massive thanks for the cake and to you guys (the most important part) for continually supporting Denton raceway.

See you all here next season!!! We maybe able to get the damm track outside under the flood lights this summer!!!!

Enjoy your racing.
