Meeting Report - Sunday 26th June 2005 (Q)

20th Meeting!!! Where has the time gone!!! It doesn't seem that long ago since we built the track and ran the first meeting. Anyway this was a Sunday meeting and the weather was great, so the track went outside in the sunshine. We kicked off at 12pm as there was a Belle Vue meeting the same night and a few racers wanted to go there afterwards.

This was the 2nd qualifier at Denton and a few racers raised their game as valuable qualifying points were up for grabs.

We had a new racer at Denton - welcome Steve C, a regular at Brisca tracks and a regular Stoxnet poster. Steve had raced before at Nelson but was traveling from Nottingham so admitted he wasn't going to be a Nelson regular. Anyway Steve was up with Big N for the Belle Vue meeting, and they both decided to race at Denton first. Welcome Steve C!

The rest of the racers were regulars - however we were missing a few due to other commitments.

Heat 1 - 6 racers took up the challenge. Richard took up the early running and looked hungry for the win and to qualify for the final. He had a great heat 1 and scored well. Young Jon also wanted the win and his first lane gained him a maximum 15 score. Steve C was finding his feet in his Mellor replica, he got better as the race meeting went on. Nige also started well, just once race win short a max on lane 1. Hil and Alan didn't look as quick in this one, they got caught up in the traffic and struggled a bit.

In the end Young Jon took advantage of his inside (Richard) start and kept out of trouble to take a strong win. Richard was well back in the groove and cruised to 2nd for the final place. Hil came back strong at the end and took a fine max in her last lane, this wasn't quite enough, and she took 3rd. Nige 4th, Alan 5th and Steve C 6th.

Steve C (30) soon in the action in heat 1.
Usual Denton heat winners Jon 91 and 92.

Heat 2 - Just 5 in this, but this was a bruising race. Dunc took up the early running and placed well while all around him were falling off!! Chris especially, he didn't score a point on lane 4. I started well and took 12 points from 15. Cath and Pete were struggling a bit, each getting caught up in traffic and just not getting the breaks. By half way it was between myself, Dunc and Chris (who had comeback well). Before the last lane, I had 31, and Dunc and Chris had 21. Chris failed to capitalize on this and scored 1, where Dunc scored 11. In the end I took the win followed by Dunc. 3rd was Chris, 4th Cath and 5th Pete.

Heat 2 action with Pete (88), Cath (38) and Chris (24).

We were bombing along quite nice at this stage and decided to take a (Warton) tea break. Thanks to Hil who helped me with the food and drinks.

Right after we were all fed and watered we started the consolation. Just 2 places up for grabs - 7 racers in this one.

Steve C was the surprise package in lane 1 - he took a fine 11 points in lane 1, but struggled later on the outer lanes, just a few more points for Steve would have seen him through. Pete was a man on a mission in this one - just coming out 3 times out of 15 races. He wanted the qualifying points!!! Who would follow Pete for the 2nd final place.

This was all in the air until the last set of races. Chris and Steve C were looking good, but Nige came back from the dead to score a max on his last lane - this took him through to the final. A good race!

More action with Pete (88), Cath (38) and Chris (24).

Final time - Thanks to Cath and Hil for having a go at scoring this - they did brilliant, Cath especially keeping us all in check and keeping cool on the scores.

Nige took advantage of his yellow grade and was flying He started strongly but let it go to pieces in his 2nd lane, Dunc, Richard, Pete and Young Jon were fighting for the win too. I was struggling a bit with the pace in this one and couldn't get going. By half way it was Richard who took a slender lead, He was racing well and shifted me a few times with some great hits!

However it was Nige who was at it again - in his last lane he took a maximum of 20 points - this catapulted him from last to first - and he took a fine win!! Well done Nige.

GN time - this was a little more serious than normal, but by the end was looking more like a GN should. Alan got hold of this race by the scruff of the neck and he looked determined to win it. There was some good battles around the back for the minor places, Nige was back on the white line and was trying his hardest to make an impression on the race. Cath was also back on the pace and was looking fast and sharp. Hil was looking better and improved away from the traffic.

In the end Alan took a strong win, followed by Cath, and Hill. I was the highest finalist in 4th, with Chris taking 5th. Young Jon struggled a bit, but got stuck in - he brought in the tail end in this one.

Well in the points race I have increased my lead by a few points, Dunc has sneaked up to 2nd and looks dangerous! The GN championship is very very tight - about 6 or 7 can go through. Remember there are only 4 spaces for this one!!

Last (91) and first (11) in the GN .

There was room for one more race - we had done really well for time. This was the Helter Skelter race - a bit of a throw back to the Helter Skelter races at Belle Vue. Our tribute to the fine Hyde road track. But long live Kirky lane though!!!

Chris was the only one to miss out - he went early to watch the rugby - after all that his team (Wigan) got beat.

Anyway - the race was all in, racing from the blue line. This was a great race - no holds bar racing with loads of action and bumper work. Steve C especially was throwing the bumper about (when Nige passed anyway!).

In the end of a fun race - Pete took his 2nd win of the evening, Dunc took 2nd with me 3rd.

A great way to wind up another great meeting at Denton.

Is that how you hitch the caravan on?

Keep smiling and enjoy your racing.
