Meeting Report -Friday 22nd July 2005

Maybe slot car meetings are like buses – what do you mean buses?? Well this meeting was the start of feast of racing. The previous Tuesday saw a Nelson meting, while Friday was Denton, then on Saturday and Sunday Glen was running his speed weekend. Then Sunday saw the Brisca F1s at Belle Vue for the 1st Semi final!!!
A feast of racing!!!

The bookings for all of the slot car meetings show a healthy following. Nelson 12 racers, Denton 14, Burnley predicted 18! Great turnouts!

Right anyway – this was the 21st meeting at Denton, 21 meetings! I don’t know where the time has gone. The weather was dry and warm so the track was outside. Alan was first to show, I was still having my tea, but Alan helped me set up he track. Thanks Alan.

This meeting saw the addition of 2 new Denton racers. Both very experienced racers and they showed this in their 1st meeting here. Welcome Alec and Nick. I had better update the driver’s profiles then!!! Bet Dunc has already done it!!! Thanks Fella.

A full house of 14 racers – Chris Crewe couldn’t make it, but Alec was first reserve so stepped up for the challenge.

Heat 1 - Richard (is that number 7 or number 1???) Took the early lead in this one. However by the 2nd change Young Jon had hooked up his caravan and put on his leather backed driving gloves and was scoring well. By Lane 3 it was between Young Jon and Richard, however Richard found it tough on the outer lanes and when Gary started on lane 1 he was picking up wins for fun. Kirky (welcome back) was a bit rusty and he was making hard work out of his race. Alan, Pete and Cath were also suffering a bit in this one. In the end Gary had done enough to take the win, ahead of Jon and Richard. It was close.

Is it right at the end of the straight?

Heat 2 - I new I had to qualify to keep up my lead in the track championship, Young Jon had already booked his place in the final, so the pressure was on.
However new racers Nick and Alec had something to say about that, both were going really well and quickly got to grips with the track. Myself and Nige were having fun and Nige was unlucky not to stuff me (cleanly) about 3 times. Every time he hit me, we both came off. I started to break and that made it worse, we weren’t doing very well!!! Dunc and Big J were also struggling more than normal.

Welcome to Denton Raceway Nick.

Consi time - A lot of big names in this one, just going for 2 places in the final. So this was going to be close. Pete took the early lead and was looking for a place in the final, he was followed by myself and Dunc. I was having a bad race until the later lanes when everybody else kept falling off. Kirky especially, he was all on his own in the lead and he fell out of his lane all on his own! Much to the amusement of Nige! Out of the 10 racers, Richard seemed to be the only one who knew how to win races and stay on too! Nobody could get it together and the final points showed this –
Consi
Richard – 39 points
Jon – 26 points
Nige -25 points (higher finishes)
Kirky – 25 points
Cath – 24
Hil – 24
Pete, Big J, Dunc – 21
Alan – 11

Scary!!! Anyway myself and Richard had got through. I had managed a miracle, and I don’t know how!!!

Final time - Alec made the best start on lane 1 and took an early lead. I came on his inside and we both stopped scoring. Gary and Richard were doing well, but Young Jon made the most of his blue position and was looking very quick. By half way it was between Alec and Young Jon. However Richard had a strong last couple of lanes, while Young Jon didn’t. In the end it was a close call between them, but Y Jon took his 2nd final in a week, and Richard took 2nd. Alec took a good 3rd, followed by Gary, myself and Nick. A good race.

GN time - Big J looked the most determined in this race, Gary also fancied a good place. Some of the non finalist had the opportunity to do well, but I must admit from what I saw a lot of racers chucked their racing heads out of the cab and got stuck in!!! This was a great race with a lot of bumpers flying in!!!!
Another close finish – but Big J made up for a disappointing heat and consi with a fine win, followed by Gary and Alec.

GN action with Pete (88) Dunc (6) and Big N (10).

Helter Skelter - This is becoming a standard fixture of the Denton meetings. This is an all in race, with all racers following GN rules and racing from the blue line. The idea is to have as much fun as possible and use the bumper as much as possible. However a couple of racers forgot this and the early lanes were a bit quiet. I must also add that Jane (Osborne now!) bobbed in to say hello, and ended up racing. I would have also liked to race, but I only have 14 car heat sheets!
All racers stayed for this – also stating how popular this race is! The early races were quiet, but Young Jon, Dunc and Nige added the fun element in to this race! All 3 put in some massive hits in! Young Jon tested the fence and Richard caught the action in what I can say is one of the best pictures ever taken at Denton!!!
I'm sure Dunc will give it justice along with some other recent fantastic action pictures!
Dunc and Nige were having fun, each trying to place each other through the wires! I don’t know what it is with the wires at Denton, but people love to try and put each other through it!!!! I love it!! Anyway this was the best race of the night, the results were not that important, but the winner for the record was Richard. Well done sir!

Thanks again to all racers – another great meeting at Denton and a great start to weekend of racing!

Enjoy your racing and keep smiling
