Meeting Report - Sunday 13th August 2006

Well this was the last meeting at Denton this season, and what a cracking meeting it was. Some classic races with some top class action. We may have been down on numbers, but the racing was of a high quality. Just wanted to say thanks to all racers who have attended Denton this year, you have made this another cracking season at Denton. I don’t feel going non graded has effected the racing, certainly not judging on the meeting today, maybe numbers are down but the racing has been great.

So thanks to all racers – I will also get some special mentions over with at the top of the shop!

Mum and Dad – thanks for the top class catering throughout the season – your help has been very much appreciated and I thank you for all your work in the background.
Rachael – thanks for putting up with me, the track and the 13 or so people and tommy in the house every month!
Duncan – for the top notch website, this is updated after every meeting, and for his help with the track.

So with this being the last meeting of the season, here at Denton, we had the track championship and GN championship to be settled.

Ok – 10 racers were in attendance, Pete missed out with a bad back, get well soon mate, and Cath had also dropped out.
So 2/3rds it was then.

Heat 1 - Nige had the bit between his teeth in this one, he raced well from yellow grade (how has managed to stay yellow???), however he scored well, especially on the inner lanes. Good to see Alec back who was also back in to his stride (in a Dunc spare). Also special mention to Yonathon, who is visiting Alec, he has raced before, but it was great to see him and Tayla at Denton. Yonathon was finding his feet in this one, when out of the traffic he scored well. All of the heats were very close with a lot of good drivers in then, so not really a meet for Yonathon to get too much free track. Still he did well. Myself, Dunc, John and Dan were having fun getting in each others way, and generally not scoring much!! In the end it was Nige who took the win, followed by Alec, myself, Dunc, Dan, John and Yonathon.

Heat 2 - Another cracking race, with a lot of good racers in it. Also good to see Chris back at Denton, he was flying, but couldn’t really keep out of trouble in his light weight special. Still he was enjoying himself. Young Jon was also back racing at Denton, after a few meetings off, again he was in the groove and well on the pace, baring his dodgy hand break!! Dan and Dunc both looked a bit better in this one, they both scored a lot better and ended up with much better positions. Dunc won it, Dan 2nd.

Heat 3 - Another cracking race with plenty of good hits and bumper work. Again it was 2nd chance for quite a few drivers. John was especially up for it and scorched round the track for a fine win. Young Jon was also in the same mode and took a good 2nd. Myself and my dad were making hard work of it, I came 5th and my dad last! No sweets for us then!!

So then top 6 went through to the final. Myself, My dad, Chris and Yonathon had failed to make it. My failure to take a final place had all but given Dunc the track championship, I would have needed a miracle to have caught him anyway. So Dunc took the track championship – well done sir! Saves me getting it engraved anyway!!! hehe

The final winner would take home the Tip Top Trophy – an annual award supplied by my dad.
The final - Was a good race, most racers really went for it, Young Jon took the caravan way, stayed out of trouble and scored very well. Alec was also up for this one, causing problems for the drivers around him and he was also dishing out the bumper where needed. In the end it was Young Jon that got his hands on the trophy, followed in 2nd by Alec and 3rd Nige. A good race.

GN – As usual non finalists went from their gradings, where finalists were a lap down. This always gives this race a slightly different feel, plus the none fielding of the cars also adds something different. Anyway in this one it was about survival – it was a very low scoring race. Yonathon was really benefiting from a quieter track, he scored well. My dad was also happier away from the traffic, he scored a point better than Yonathon to take the win. Dan was the highest finalist in 3rd.
Another good race.

GN Championship

Dunc had brought his laptop so he could tot up the scores for this one. The GN championship is always a close one here at Denton, and again this year it was close.
My dads win, plus a couple of good past GN results, had taken him to the top of the points for this one, followed by myself, Dunc and Dan.
The winner of this one would take away the cracking GN trophy, kindly supplied by team big. All or bust for this one – no fielding and the top 2 going from blue, the others from red, this is always a good hard race. After lane 1 I had a small advantage, but I scored nothing on my next one! Giving Dunc the lead and Dan level scores with me. By the end of the 3rd lane it was myself and Dunc with 14 points, dan 12 and my dad 4. Luckily (for me) I had lane 1 last and managed 4 wins, thus sealing the win. Dunc was 2nd, Dan 3rd and my dad 4th. A good race.

Last race of the night was the caravans – as usual it was chaos and a lot of fun. Nige took the win, and the foamy fruits (don’t ask!!)

That was it for another meeting at Denton.
Well done Young Jon for the final win.
Duncan – track champion.

See you all very soon – Bookings open on Tuesday 22nd for the very special meeting at Reddish – USA V England – not to be missed!!!

Thanks all.

Keep smiling
JON 92
